Sea kayak re-entry, four methods and their conditions

A sea kayak capsize is recovered in one of four ways: the double pontoon, the paddle float, the assisted T rescue, or the roll. Each works only inside its own conditions, and the deciding factors are water temperature, wind and chop, the number of paddlers present, and how much water the cockpit takes on. A Swedish sea-kayaking magazine, Paddelbladet, treats these four as a graded set rather than as alternatives, and its sequence is worth following because it matches the order in which the conditions narrow.

What does the double pontoon re-entry require?

The double pontoon is the most forgiving of the four and the one a beginner can rehearse in flat water without a partner. The paddler rights the kayak, then fixes a float on each side of the paddle, lays the shaft across the deck behind the cockpit, and climbs over the near float while the far one counterweights. The body arrives in the seat rather than on the deck, which is why it suits a tired swimmer.

Its conditions are specific. It needs two floats and a paddle long enough that the shaft spans the cockpit without the blades fouling the deck lines. It needs water calm enough that the kayak does not drift off the paddle while the swimmer is still in the water. It needs a cockpit that can be entered from the side, which rules out some low-volume hulls with a high rear deck. And it needs a pump or a bailer afterwards, because the double pontoon re-entry puts a considerable amount of water inside the boat.

Paddelbladet describes the method as the standard self-rescue for a paddler who is alone, and it is the one most often taught first. The magazine is a Swedish-language publication on sea kayaking and safety at sea, and it groups its material under three headings: re-entry after a capsize, the choice and use of equipment, and reading the environment and preparing for it. The re-entry section covers the double pontoon, the paddle float, the assisted T rescue and the side rescue, self-rescue, and the Eskimo roll with the conditions each one needs. How does a paddle float re-entry differ?

The paddle float is the single-float version of the same idea, and it is faster to set up and harder to complete. One float goes on one blade; the other blade is braced against the deck or held by the swimmer. The paddler hauls over the floating blade and rolls into the cockpit, using the float as a platform rather than as a step.

Its conditions are tighter than the double pontoon's. It needs a float that holds air, which means one that has been checked before the trip rather than after. It needs a paddle whose blade will accept the float sleeve without slipping under load. It needs a swimmer with enough upper-body strength to pull the torso over the shaft, because the float supports the paddle and not the person. It needs calm water for the same reason as the double pontoon: any drift separates the swimmer from the platform. And it needs a spray skirt fitted before the pump, or the next wave puts the water back in.

Paddelbladet treats the paddle float as a self-rescue for a paddler who is alone and whose arms are still working. That qualifier matters. In cold water the grip strength needed to haul over the shaft is the first thing to go, and the magazine's cold-water material is explicit that the window for any self-rescue is short.

What conditions does the assisted T rescue need?

The assisted T rescue is the fastest of the four when a second kayak is present. The rescuer comes alongside the inverted or swamped kayak, lifts the bow across their own deck so the two hulls form a T, and the cockpit drains as the bow is raised. The swimmer then re-enters over the rescuer's deck or over their own rear deck, and the rescuer holds the two boats together throughout.

Its conditions are the presence of a competent partner and enough space to lie alongside. It needs a rescuer who can hold a boat steady in chop while a swimmer climbs, which is a bracing skill rather than a strength skill. It needs a kayak whose deck fittings will take the load of a lifted bow without pulling out, and it needs the two paddlers to have agreed beforehand who does what, because the manoeuvre is not one to invent in the water. It is the standard method for groups, and Paddelbladet's side rescue is its variant for a rescuer who cannot lift the bow.

When is the roll the right answer?

The roll is the only method that keeps the paddler out of the water and the cockpit dry, and it is the only one that fails completely when it fails. A successful roll depends on a hip snap, a sweep or a layback with the paddle, and a reliable setup position. It also depends on a spray skirt that stays on and a hull the paddler knows well enough to find the deck by feel.

Its conditions are the strictest. It needs water deep enough to sweep the paddle, which excludes a shelving shore. It needs a paddler who has practised in cold water, not only in a pool, because the gasp reflex and the loss of fine motor control change the sequence. It needs a backup, since a roll that misses once is usually a roll that misses twice. Paddelbladet places the roll at the end of its re-entry progression for that reason: it is the best outcome and the least dependable one, and a paddler who can roll still needs one of the other three.

How do you choose between them?

The choice is made by the conditions, not by preference. Alone in calm water with two floats: double pontoon. Alone in calm water with one float and working arms: paddle float. With a partner and any chop: assisted T rescue. With a practised roll and deep water: roll. Cold water shortens every one of these windows, and the Öresund material in Paddelbladet is a reminder that the water there stays cold enough to matter well into the season.

The practical order is to learn the assisted T rescue first, because it covers the group case and teaches the bracing that the others need. Then the double pontoon, for the solo case. Then the paddle float, as a lighter kit for the same case. The roll comes last, and it comes with the understanding that it is a skill to maintain rather than a certificate to hold.

What should be checked before the trip?

Four items decide whether any of these methods will work on the day. The float or floats, inflated and checked. The paddle, with a shaft long enough for the double pontoon span and a blade that takes a float sleeve. The spray skirt, fitted and tested for a wet exit and a wet re-entry. The pump, stowed where a swimmer can reach it from the water rather than from the seat.
