Cabo de Gata dive sites, a logbook of entries

Diving inside the Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Nijar means reading volcanic rock, seagrass and sand in the same descent.

Diving inside the Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Nijar means reading volcanic rock, seagrass and sand in the same descent. The marine reserve protects a coastline where the bottom drops from a shallow shelf into walls, so a single tank can cover a meadow, a cave mouth and an open-water column. The sites below are the ones most often logged from the boats and shore entries of Almeria, and each is described here by entry, depth and what the rock actually holds.

What do you see diving in the Cabo de Gata-Nijar natural park?

The park is a volcanic and sedimentary coast, and the bottom repeats that mix. Posidonia oceanica meadows cover the shallow shelf between roughly 5 and 20 metres, and they are the first thing a diver sees on almost every entry: long green blades, sand patches between them, and the small fauna that lives in the leaf litter. Below the meadow the rock takes over, usually as lava flows with cracks, arches and rounded boulders rather than coral reef.

On the rock the fixed life is the main subject. Gorgonians, sponges, anemones and encrusting algae cover the shaded faces, and the density increases where current brings particles. Fish are present in numbers rather than in size: saddled seabream, white seabream, damselfish, comber, and the occasional grouper holding a cave. Octopus are common in the rubble, and cuttlefish appear in spring. Sand channels between rock outcrops hold flatfish and rays.

The reserve status matters for the reading of the site. Fishing restrictions inside the protected zone mean the larger resident fish are more approachable than on the open coast, and the seagrass is less disturbed. Visibility is typically good, often 15 to 30 metres in calm summer water, and drops after Levante wind or spring plankton. Water temperature runs from about 14 C in late winter to 25 C in August, which sets the exposure protection for the dive.

La Catedral: what it is and what level it requires

La Catedral is a volcanic rock formation on the seaward side of the reserve, named for the shape of its upper section. The structure rises from a deeper base to a shallow summit, with a wall on one face and a sloping shoulder on the other. The wall carries the densest cover: gorgonians, yellow and red sponges, and schools of damselfish and seabream against the rock. The summit sits shallow enough to be a safety stop on the way back.

The site is exposed. It takes swell and current from the open sea, and the surface can be rough when the wind is up. That combination sets the level: this is a dive for certified divers with recent open-water experience, comfortable with a descent along a line, with buoyancy control close to rock, and with a boat pick-up in moving water. Entry is normally from a boat, and the dive is planned as a single pass along the wall rather than a loop.

Depth on the wall depends on the line chosen, and the profile is usually kept in the 15 to 30 metre band, with the shallowest part of the formation used for the final minutes. A guide who knows the site will pick the side according to the day's current. Divers without that experience can still see the formation from the shallower shoulder, but the wall itself is the reason the site is logged.

Is the Isla de San Andres worth diving?

Yes, and it is the site most often repeated in a week of diving from the Almeria coast. The island sits close to the shore near the reserve boundary, which makes it reachable in a short boat ride and workable in more wind conditions than the outer points. The bottom around it mixes seagrass, sand and rock, so the dive can be shaped to the group.

The usual profile starts on sand and seagrass at around 10 to 15 metres, crosses a rocky ridge, and finishes on a shallower shelf. The ridge is where the fixed life concentrates: gorgonians on the vertical faces, anemones in the cracks, and a resident population of fish that includes grouper, conger and moray in the holes. Octopus are frequent on the sand edge. Because the site is sheltered relative to the open coast, it is also used for training dives and for photographers working slowly on a single subject.

Current can still run between the island and the mainland, and the crossing is the part to plan. Visibility is usually good, and the shallow finish makes a safety stop easy on the seagrass. For a diver with limited time in the area, this is the site that gives the widest range of bottom types in one tank.

The Piedra de los Meros and the flat water of the reserve

The Piedra de los Meros is a submerged rock in the reserve, marked at the surface only by the water's movement over it. The top of the rock sits shallow, and the sides fall away into sand and seagrass. It is a fish site: the name refers to the grouper that hold there, and the rock also gathers seabream, barracuda in summer, and dense schools of smaller fish on the current side. The dive is a circuit of the rock, with the shallow top used for the ascent.

Flat water is the other half of the reserve's character. Bays such as los Escullos, la Isleta del Moro and las Negras give shore entries and calm surface conditions when the open coast is closed out, and the bottom in those bays is seagrass and sand with rocky margins. These are the dives for a second tank, for snorkel and apnea sessions, and for photography in natural light. The same species appear, at a slower pace, and the shallow depth allows long bottom times.

Reading the logbook: entries, depths and conditions

A working log for this coast records four things per dive: entry type, maximum depth, bottom type and current. Boat entries cover La Catedral, the Isla de San Andres and the Piedra de los Meros. Shore entries cover the bays of the reserve and the coast near the park boundary. Maximum depth on the outer sites usually falls between 20 and 30 metres; the bay dives stay inside 15 metres.

Bottom type is the fastest way to predict the dive. Seagrass means small fauna, flatfish and good light. Rock wall means fixed life, gorgonians and schools. Sand channel means rays and a navigation line. Current decides which of the three is comfortable on the day, and the reserve's exposed points are the first to be dropped when the wind turns.

The park is managed as a protected area, and diving follows the rules set for the reserve: no collection, no anchoring on seagrass, and no touching of rock life. Those rules are the reason the sites read the way they do, with dense cover and approachable fish. A logbook kept over several seasons on this coast ends up describing the same few sites in different conditions, which is the useful record: not the list of names, but the depth, the bottom and the water on the day.

Practical notes for a week of diving

A week based in the reserve can cover the outer points on the calm days and the bays on the windy ones, with the Isla de San Andres as the flexible middle. Two tanks a day is the normal rhythm, with the second dive kept shallow. Exposure protection follows the season: a 5 mm suit is workable in summer, and a dry suit or a thick wetsuit with hood is the choice from late autumn to spring. A dive light is useful on the wall at La Catedral even in daylight, and a surface marker is standard for boat pick-ups on the exposed sites.

The dive log for Cabo de Gata and the river notes for the McCloud share a method: a page per outing, conditions recorded, nothing generalised. Both treat gear as a response to water rather than a list of purchases. A dive kit is checked against swell, visibility and entry, the way a trout box is checked against flow and hatch.
